Yan Kuznetsov was focused on preparing for Friday’s home game with the Calgary Wranglers.
And then his phone buzzed. A sudden change of plans.

The Flames, needing a defenceman after an injury to Dennis Gilbert, rewarded Kuznetsov with his first career call-up.
The 21-year-old left-hander was hustling to meet the team in Philadelphia, where they’re looking to extend a three-game winning streak in Saturday’s matinee against the Flyers (11 a.m. MT, Sportsnet West/Sportsnet 960 The Fan).

“I’m happy for Kuzy,” Wranglers head coach Trent Cull said. “He’s a big strong guy, he skates really well, and I think he’s been really solid. Me and the boss were talking about this yesterday and I think it’s the right guy.
“Because at this point, you want someone who has been consistent and solid. And I think from the start of the year until now, it’s not a huge curve, but he’s just been simple, solid and real consistent in his becoming better every game.”
Kuznetsov, listed at 6-foot-5 and 220 pounds, was the Flames second-round selection in the 2020 NHL draft. Primarily a stay-at-home sort, he has logged 112 career appearances at the AHL level, with seven goals and 26 points. In the minors, his role includes a regular shift on the penalty kill.
It’s uncertain if Kuznetsov will be tapped for his big-league debut in Philly. Jordan Oesterle, who was scratched for Thursday’s victory over the Nashville Predators, could draw in alongside Nick DeSimone on the third pairing.
